Once a young, beautiful girl came to a sage, all in tears.
- What to do? she cried. – I always try to be kind and treat people well, not to offend anyone, I try to help everyone as I can. And yet instead of gratitude and respect, people mock and insult me. And they are even openly hostile to me. And I'm not guilty of anything, and that's why I'm so offended. Please advise me what to do.
The sage said with a smile:
- Undress naked and walk around the city like this.
- Don't be crazy! - the girl was indignant. - So everyone will disgrace me and God knows what they will do with me.
Then the sage opened the door and placed a mirror on the table.
"You see," he said, "to appear in society naked is a fear." Why then do you go about the world with a naked soul? It is discovered as this door. And anyone without invitation can enter your life. And if they see their vices reflected in your virtues as in a mirror, they try to slander, humiliate and hurt you. Not everyone has the courage to admit that someone is better than them. Unwilling to change, the wicked man is always at enmity with the righteous.
- What should I do? – asked the girl.
- Come, I'll show you my garden.
There the sage said:
- For many years I have been watering these beautiful flowers and taking care of them. But I have never noticed how the flower buds bloom, although afterwards I enjoy the beauty and fragrance of each one of them...
Be like that too - like a flower: Reveal your heart to people slowly, imperceptibly. See who is a good person and deserves to be a friend - open your soul to him, and not to those who pluck your flowers and trample them with their feet...
Those whom you see are rude, dishonest and ungrateful - run away from them and do not help them. Don't let every person into your life. Stay away from rude people and keep your soul locked up for them…
