People give up on all kinds of New Year's resolutions. If you don't know if you can get through the weekend without a few pints of beer, or if you think life without chocolate isn't worth it, another option is to give up meat. Not only will you be doing your part to tackle climate change, but you'll also be improving your health by cutting meat out of your diet. Here are seven reasons if you need convincing.
- Weight loss: The average person can lose about 4 kg if they give up meat. That's according to a George Washington University study that analyzed 15 studies in Europe and America and found that a vegetable-based diet can help you lose weight even without counting calories and changing your exercise habits. . Another study among Buddhist monks found that vegetarianism reduced body mass index.
- Reduces the risk of heart disease: Giving up meat can also lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
- … and protect against diabetes: A study found that people who eat meat at least once a week have a 29% greater risk of developing diabetes than vegetarians. People consuming sausages are at 38% higher risk of diabetes.
- ...and from cancer: The World Health Organization classifies sausages as carcinogenic, which means that bacon and various types of salami fall into the same category as gamma rays and cigarettes. Red meat is designated as "probably" carcinogenic.
- Change in intestinal flora: A study by the City University of New York found that vegans have more protective types of gut bacteria than meat eaters.
- Better condition after exercise: If your muscles are sore after exercise, it could be the high-protein diet of carnivores, which can cause waste products like uric acid and lactic acid to build up in the muscles. This can cause pain and slow recovery, says Dr Chidi Ngwaba of the European Society for Lifestyle Medicine.
- You will feel better overall: The billionaire Richard Branson says giving up meat has made him feel healthier and more active. Matt Fraser, author of the No Meat Athlete blog, writes that vegetarianism has helped him run faster, eat more and lose weight. He also discovered new foods that he liked.
