St. Stephen's Day Customs

The holiday falls on the so-called dirty days, which are believed to harbor demons and evil forces. According to popular belief, women should not sweep, spin or wash their hair during these days. Men should not wash their shirts. It is believed that if these prohibitions are not followed, the violators will fall ill with bad diseases.

It is customary on St. Stephen's Day for the young family to visit their godparents or parents.

Cooling is done in some places. In this custom, brides make wrists and tie a ring or other personal item to them, then melt it in a basin full of still water, which is covered with a red veil.

The next day, a girl dressed as a bride takes out her wrists one by one and while others sing incantation songs (ladanki), foretells who will marry which boy.

It is considered that St. Stephen's Day closes the cycle of the old year and begins the path of the new. It is a day for taking stock and making plans for the new year.

Barren and pregnant women do not work anything on this day for an easy birth.
