15 things you need to know about your visit to the Maldives

The Maldives are one of the most famous and one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the world. Almost anyone who has ever seen photos or videos of this stunning collection of islands has immediately fallen in love with it (or at the very least, wants to visit this magical place).

Despite its reputation as a beautiful island, there are still some things that may surprise you here, and because we want you to make the most of your time there, we've put together a quick list of things worth knowing when you visit Maldives.

1.) There are over 1,000 islands (about 1,190 to be exact) and each resort you can stay at is usually on its own island.

2.) The Maldives are a Muslim country. This means that in places like its capital, Malé, no alcohol is allowed and you can't bring in any duty-free alcohol. However, you can get alcoholic beverages at the resorts, so you don't have to worry.

3.) The islands here are the same ones you've seen on the internet with the luminescent plankton glowing on the beaches at night.

4.) One of the best ways to make the most of your time here is to visit different islands (stay in one place for a few days and move to another). Even when booking a stay at a resort that has multiple properties on different islands, they usually recommend trying more than one (for example, for a 2-week stay, try one for week 1 and another for week 2).

5.) You can swim with whale sharks here. You can see them all year round and although there is never a guarantee, the best time of year to do so is around June to September.

6.) The period from June to September is also the best time of the year to see Manta Rays as well.

7.) A visit to the Maldives can also be combined with a visit to India or Sri Lanka. It's not essential, of course, but the destinations are close enough and cheap enough that you can visit them.

8.) The weather is almost consistently good throughout the year. Some months are a bit rainier, but the rain doesn't always last that long and will leave you with plenty of sun to enjoy your day.

9.) Peak visiting periods are from December to April. If you want to buy a bargain, try visiting The Maldives outside of these months.

10.) One of the best ways to snorkel here is with a guide for your initial dive session, so try to find out if your resort offers guides before you visit.

11.) Once you arrive at the airport, you will still need to board a boat or seaplane to get somewhere else.

12.) The Maldives is much more than just a honeymoon destination. It's great for all kinds of vacation-seeking travelers (families, adventure seekers...etc.), so don't let its romantic appeal stop you from adventuring.

13.) Another great way to save money is to go half board instead of full board. If you eat breakfast properly (ie not early), you'll find that you're never hungry enough to eat at lunch. (We all snack around 10:00 – 11:00, so lunch, which is offered at 1:00 p.m., is too early to eat again.)

14.) Alcohol at resorts isn't as expensive as you think (if you're not all-inclusive)

15.) Staying in a water villa is mandatory. Even if it's just for one night, it's definitely a Maldivian experience worth it.
