The most beautiful places in Africa

Africa conjures up thoughts of the wide-open savanna dotted with acacia trees as the sun settles over the horizon. While this type of landscape is typical of African destinations, the continent is incredibly diverse with hidden gems around almost every corner. This article reveals a diverse selection of ten of the most beautiful places in all of Africa.

 The Okavango Delta in Botswana

As one of the world's largest inland deltas, the water is fed by Uganda's high waters, which flow into the Kalahari Desert plains before emptying into the open and flooding the savanna as it tries in vain to reach the Indian Ocean.

Many call the Okavango Delta Africa's last paradise. The delta is the natural lifeblood of all wildlife in the region, thus creating a vast oasis for exploration. Fly to the town of Maun and from there travel through different regions of the delta to enjoy a mostly water-based safari.

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

Towering at a height of 5,895 meters, Mount Kili is the highest peak in Africa. Every year, many climb the peak from where they enjoy a fabulous view. It's no easy task, but for those who make it to the top to watch the sun rise above the clouds, it's an incredible achievement.

What makes the area even more attractive is the fact that the base of the mountain is home to some of Africa's best parks and game reserves. This makes it incredibly easy to combine the two experiences together.

Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe

The sheer size and power of Victoria Falls is what makes these falls a 'must see'. You may have seen the power of Niagara Falls, but these waterfalls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe are an incredible experience.

Locals call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya", which literally translates to "smoke that thunders". The tranquil Zambezi River plunges 30 meters down and flows into a wall of mist with an authority you've never seen before.

Sahara in Morocco

The Sahara is mostly impassable due to its unpleasant climate and frequent sandstorms. Lucky for you, there's an access point to the desert from the northern tip of Morocco in the town of Zagora, which is friendlier than the others and easily one of the most beautiful (and desolate) places in Africa.

Experience a camel safari in the dunes, camp overnight and let the locals entertain you with drumming and singing around the campfire while you look up at the stars.

Kruger National Park in South Africa

South Africa is home to the national park known as the Kruger National Park. It's one of the most famous game parks in the world, and for good reason. This is a park where spotting the Big 5 (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) is almost certain and one of the main reasons why so many tourists choose South Africa for their safari.

Whether you enjoy luxury or enjoy traveling alone and making it more affordable, there are ways to do it in South Africa.

Wildebeest migration in Kenya and Tanzania

Welcome to the greatest wildlife show on earth. This mass migration is perhaps the most amazing sight you will ever see. Every year several million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras start from the southern Serengeti in Tanzania and follow the rain to Kenya's Masai Mara. In the process, these animals must survive attacks from crocodiles in the water and predatory animals in the fields.

The migration itself actually happens year-round, as the herds are constantly moving according to the ever-changing climate. That being said, the famous crossing, where the wildebeest will have to cross crocodile-infested rivers, takes place from July to August.

Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya

Lake Nakuru National Park is home to a congregation of one million flamingos, making it one of the best places to see these pink birds.

Apart from flamingos, the park is also home to rhinos, buffaloes, jackals, lions and many other species of animals.

Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Virunga Mountains are a range of volcanic mountains that share a border with Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

A visit here will give you a chance to get up close and personal with the critically endangered mountain gorilla. The dense rainforest on the slopes of Mount Virunga is the last home of this species.

Another stunning sight in this park is the Niiragongo Volcano Lava Lake, which stretches for a full two kilometers in width.

Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi is one of the largest lakes in the world and was recently recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Its incredible biodiversity is comparable to the Galapagos and contains 13,000 species of tropical fish – more than any other in the world.

If you're a diver, look no further than this tropical paradise.

The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt

As one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, these pyramids combined with the Sphinx are perhaps the most iconic landmark in Egypt. Built between 2700-2500 BC, these 4,500-year-old tombs are a wonder to see in person.

During this era, the bodies of pharaohs were mummified and buried safely in a pyramid with its greatest treasures, comfort items, slaves and animals to accompany them in the afterlife.
